The sky is a treasure for glamping - 10 tips for putting the sky in the limelight
If you own a glamping site in a remote region, do you realize that the sky above you could be your biggest asset?
According to Hipcamps Travel Trends for 2025, 60% more travelers will book a trip in 2025 to see an astronomical event.
In the trend report by booking.com, 62% of travelers wanted to travel to a dark sky location.
But there is more to it. Also the rural sky itself is actually a big asset. What is an everyday commodity in rural regions is a luxury for city dwellers: a wide and natural sky.
So here are my 10 tips for putting the sky in the limelight for glamping hosts:
1. Market it: Be aware that the vast sky above you is an attraction in itself. Most urban dwellers only see a part of the sky in their daily life. Showcase it in your marketing with good photos and your activity offerings.
2. Make stargazing a thing. Be aware that you the sight of the Milky Way may be normal to you, but completely new to someone who grew up in an urban area. Compare your region to others on the light pollution map and consider creating a special offer for stargazing. As light pollution skyrockets 10% per year, stargazing offers could become increasingly popular in the coming years.
3. Reduce your lighting. Do not overlight your property. Invest in sustainable fireplaces and small lanterns pointing their light to the ground.
4. Think directions: be aware that the sunset with a visible sun is something that most people in urban areas don't get to experience. Find out where sunsets and sunrises occur in your location throughout the year. A small bench, targeted towards the sunset, can already make a big difference.
5. Invite for stargazing. Not all days offer the same stargazing opportunities. You can get a lunar calendar and adjust your prices accordingly. Please note that stargazing cannot be promised as it can always be cloudy. We advise guests to book at least three nights.
6. Offer sleeping under the stars with outdoor beds: sleeping directly under the sky (not in a tent) is an experience most travelers have never had. The price of an open-air bed can be higher than your actual accommodation.
7. Install permanent outdoor furniture geared towards stargazing: an outdoor platform, outdoor loungers or special designs. By the way: a wooden stargazing platform is perfect for Yoga at daytime.
8. Relaxing the neck: outdoor hammocks and special chairs for stargazing help to relax the neck and are a perfect first step to set the scene and test the best location on site.
9. Start small: the simplest solution is to provide blankets for your guests. Keep in mind that lounging can be cold in the early fall or spring. Advise your guests to dress properly.
10. Provide content: sky watching is best when you are guided by an audio voice to immerse yourself for a longer time in the sky. The immersion you get after 30 Minutes of stargazing and the surprise you get after 30 Minutes of Cloud Gazing: priceless.
